MEET HANNAH

Hannah Powell grew up in the wide-open spaces fo Texas, where the quiet rhythms of ranch life and the muted beauty of the Hill Country shaped her earliest memories - and her artistic eye. Much of her childhood was spent with her grandmother, who first nurtured her love for making art. With more cattle than playmates available, she taught her to create: drawing, sewing, needlepoint, embroidery, knitting. These tactile beginnings still echo in the way she approaches her work today - with patience, texture, and a veneration for process. Hannah pursued fine art and the history of art during her undergraduate studies at Southern Methodist University. Dividing her time between the studio and the classroom, Hannah graduated with a BFA in Studio Art and Art History. Her dual interest in artistic practice as well as artistic antecedent has always grounded and disciplined her in her own studio.

Hannah’s love of the Impressionsits and early Modernists, who aimed to depict not just form but also emotion and perspective, greatly influences her body of work. She shares their desire to move beyond realism, exploring how imagination, form and light can shape a creation.

Hannah's process is thoughtful, deliberate, and entrenched in extensive study. Drawing on historic tradition, she immerses herself in research on painting traditions – from the types of brushes artists once used to the original pigments that gave great art its enduring character. This study is not purely academic; it informs how the artist builds her compositions and selects her materials. Through this practice, Hannah’s work is at once rooted in historic precedent while remaining distinctly contemporary. Whether she is working on painting a mural, still life, landscape, or abstract portraits, the story of each piece begins to take shape through an underdrawing. Focusing on form or color, the bones of the work are built from the artist's study of light and atmosphere. Often capturing light through a camera lens and documenting her emotional response in a journal, a work of art in her studio takes time and thoughtfulness. With a goal to elevate everyday subjects and give them balance, structure and imagination, each of Hannah Powell's pieces are intentionally and painstakingly created.

Working from her studio in Atlanta, Georgia, Hannah paints alongside the rhythms of daily life, with her children often joining her at the table while she creates. Her work, resonating with collectors, designers, and aesthetes, is beautiful, timeless, and personal. Through her fine art studio, Hannah continues to develop a body of work that celebrates reflection on the past and beauty found in everyday life.
